Why People Transfer

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. People switch branches for various reasons – career opportunities not available in their current service, family considerations, or discovering their skills and interests align better elsewhere. Some find the culture of a different branch more appealing. That’s what makes transfers possible – each service has different needs and different ways of operating.

The Process

Inter-service transfers require approval from both your current branch and the receiving branch. Your current service must be willing to release you, and the new service must be willing to accept you. This typically involves meeting all accession requirements for the new branch, potentially attending that service’s basic training, and accepting whatever rank and career field the new branch offers.

Practical Considerations

Rank doesn’t always transfer directly. You may face pay grade adjustments. Your years of service count for retirement purposes, but time-in-grade requirements may reset. Career field options depend on what the receiving branch needs and what you qualify for. These realities mean transfers work better for some situations than others.
