That’s what makes this foundation so critical – everything else builds on demonstrated performance in your core responsibilities.

Education and Certifications

Every branch values education differently, but all reward it somehow. Complete your degree while you serve – tuition assistance makes this essentially free. Pursue certifications relevant to your career field. Professional military education should be completed early rather than just in time. These credentials distinguish you from peers who have similar job performance.

Volunteer for Leadership

Leadership experience matters for advancement. Volunteer to lead working groups, training events, or additional duty programs. These positions develop skills and create documentation of your potential for greater responsibility. Promotion boards look for evidence you can handle the next level – give them that evidence.

Physical Fitness Excellence

Maximum or near-maximum fitness scores demonstrate discipline and commitment. Some advancement systems directly factor fitness scores. Even where they don’t, evaluators notice who maintains peak physical condition. It’s one of the few completely controllable factors in your advancement packet.
