Navy rating selection has gotten complicated with all the manning changes and career field adjustments flying around. As someone who’s helped Sailors navigate the rating system, I learned everything there is to know about choosing and succeeding in Navy career fields. Today, I will share it all with you.

Your Navy rating defines your career – the training you receive, the ships or commands you serve on, and your opportunities for advancement. Understanding how to select and succeed in a rating matters enormously.

How Ratings Work

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Navy ratings are essentially job specialties designated by abbreviations. An IT is an Information Systems Technician. A BM is a Boatswain’s Mate. An HM is a Hospital Corpsman. Each rating has its own training pipeline, advancement rates, and sea/shore rotation patterns. That’s what makes understanding the system important – your rating affects virtually everything about your Navy experience.

Selection Considerations

Consider advancement rates when selecting a rating. Some ratings advance quickly while others have backed-up promotion rates that keep talented Sailors at lower ranks for years. Check the Navy Advancement Center data before committing. Also consider sea/shore rotation – some ratings spend most of their careers at sea, while others have more shore duty opportunities.

Conversion Opportunities

If you’re unhappy with your current rating or see better opportunities elsewhere, conversion may be possible. The Navy periodically opens conversion windows for undermanned ratings. Meeting the requirements and timing your request properly can open new career paths.
