How to Get Paid Active Duty While Interning at Your Next …

Military career planning

SkillBridge has gotten complicated with all the eligibility rules and approval processes flying around. As someone who’s helped service members use this program, I learned everything there is to know about getting paid to intern with your next employer. Today, I will share it all with you.

SkillBridge lets you spend your final months of active duty working for a civilian employer while still receiving military pay and benefits. It’s one of the best transition programs available.

How SkillBridge Works

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. During your last 180 days of service, you can participate in approved civilian training, apprenticeships, or internships with industry partners. You remain on active duty, drawing full pay and benefits, while gaining civilian work experience. That’s what makes this program so powerful – you’re essentially getting paid to audition for your next job.

Getting Approved

Approval requires commander consent – your unit must be able to release you for the program duration. Start conversations early. Have a solid transition plan that shows this opportunity advances your civilian career goals. Some commands approve readily; others resist losing personnel before separation.

Finding Opportunities

The DoD SkillBridge website lists approved industry partners across numerous fields – technology, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and more. Some programs essentially guarantee job offers to successful participants. Research options in your target industry and location well before your eligibility window opens.

SkillBridge can make the difference between a smooth transition with a job waiting and months of uncertain job searching after separation. Plan early and pursue approval aggressively.
